In Kyoto, a place of numerous sites, there's a castle/shrine/temple called kinkakuji. It's remarkable in that nearly the entire top half is covered in gold. Perhaps one of the most famous of Kyoto's tourist locations, Japanese tourists flock to this site.

The original Kinkakuji was actually burned down in the 1950s by a monk that became obsessed with it. There's a book with the same name that's supposed to be one of the masterpieces of modern Japanese literature. Hopefully one day my Japanese will be good enough to tackle those kind of things, for now I'm stuck with "Watashi no Petto no Yaggi"
